The offshore staffing method has been effective for so many companies helping them to grow at a much faster pace with more efficiency; however, not every company has found the same success with offshore staffing. The biggest reason for these companies not experiencing success with offshore staffing has little to do with the offshore staffing model itself and much to do with poor preparation and planning, having unrealistic expectations of the offshore resources, and/or a lack of sufficient support to those offshore workers.
Understanding why a company fails when it utilizes offshore staffing will be the first step to successfully implementing or continuing an offshore staffing model.
Hiring an offshore staff member without accurately defining the job responsibilities is one of the biggest mistakes that most companies make when they hire an offshore employee(s). This results in a grey area and very confused, frustrated, and delayed work for all parties involved. This type of situation is bad for everyone.
Solution: Clearly define and document what the offshore worker's primary tasks will be, their workflows, which tools they will use to perform their work, and their respective KPIs before officially starting them for your company.
Offshore employees are commonly viewed as temporary or disposable team members. This perception leads to a lack of accountability, a decrease in engagement, and poor overall performance over time.
Solution: Incorporate offshore staff into your existing workflows, meetings, and performance reviews, just like any other employee.
Having no defined structure for communicating with offshore staff often results in missed deadlines, miscommunication, and the duplication of efforts.
Solution: Develop a clear communication plan, with established timetables for all parties, and document procedures to prevent duplication of effort.
Without the ability to see how offshore resources are performing, organizations are unable to accurately measure results, make changes quickly, and hold employees accountable for their output.
Solution: Establish a performance tracking system with clearly defined accountability and reporting requirements.
Poor-quality hires often result from poorly written job descriptions and/or a poorly executed recruiting process.
Solution: Partner with vendors that specialize in role-based recruiting, and test candidates for skills and training needs.
